Presentation

The Federal Center for Technological Education of Minas Gerais - CEFET-MG is a Federal Institution of Higher Education - IFES, characterized as a multi-campus institution, operating in the State of Minas Gerais, having its General Directory in Belo Horizonte and eight campuses located in the cities of Contagem, Araxá, Leopoldina, Divinópolis, Timóteo, Varginha, Curvelo and Nepomuceno covering the middle and higher levels of education that include, in an associated way, teaching, research and extension, in the technological area and in the scope of applied research.

Thus, in the institutional context, the Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering (PPGEM) is aligned with the Institutional Development Plan (PDI) of CEFET-MG in at least two points: by expanding the Graduate Program and by teaching in an area of traditional knowledge in the Institution, reinforcing the teaching, research and extension already carried out in the undergraduate courses in Engineering offered by CEFET-MG, especially in Mechanical Engineering, a course with more than 50 years of tradition.

In the regional context, the Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering at CEFET-MG is relevant:

   - For the social and economic importance of the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte;
   - Due to the high potential of the industry for the state of Minas Gerais;
   - Due to the need to train highly qualified professionals to deal with technological challenges in the areas of energy and mechanical processes;
   - For the existence of an engaged faculty with experience in training human resources;
   - Due to the regional demand for stricto sensu graduate programs in the field of Mechanical Engineering.

In this way, the Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering (PPGEM) is structured in a concentration area called Energy and Mechanical Processes that covers two lines of research:

     Energy Efficiency;
     Efficiency in Mechanical Systems and Processes.

These lines of research aim to encourage research and technological development by investigating, in an integrated manner, aspects related to improving the efficiency of energy systems, mechanical systems and manufacturing processes, covering topics associated with mechanical design and maintenance, life cycle analysis, renewable energy, process control and automation, automotive recycling, power generation systems, refrigeration and air conditioning systems, internal combustion engines, energy auditing, among others.

Thus, graduates from PPGEM will be professionals with a solid scientific and technological background, capable of absorbing, developing and applying technologies, with a critical and creative vision, and with competence in formulating and solving of problems, meeting demands in the field of applied research involving the identification of performance requirements associated with mechanical processes (design and manufacturing) and technological innovations in the area of energy efficiency.
