SUMMARY:

This dissertation aims to analyze the struggle of representations of the feminine, between the traditional and the modern, present in the education of the Higher School of Domestic Sciences - ESCD, created in 1952, in the city of Viçosa. Located in an inland city of Minas Gerais, ESCD arose from the partnership between the United States and Brazil, aiming to training young women to act as extension workers, acting together with rural communities, guiding the female public towards a more scientific and rational administration of the home. The principles and practices of the rationalization of American domestic knowledge reached Brazil in a post-war context. After the Second World War, there was a strong dispute between capitalist and socialist nations for world sovereignty. Heading the capitalist block, the United States has intensified its influence throughout Latin America through economic treaties and policies. In the meantime, Home Economics, a North American program to expand the knowledge and habits of the domestic universe, became strategic for the performance of the United States civilization project among the female population of the so-called underdeveloped countries. In Brazil, the North American civilization project met the demand for greater female education. Since the war period, economic transformations have expanded the possibilities of women's work, as well as cultural transformations have opened space for greater demand and an increase in the women’s educational level. The confluence between the North American civilization project and the demand for expansion of schooling and female work resulted in the establishment of the Higher School of Domestic Sciences, in the city of Viçosa, Minas Gerais. In order to investigate this historical process, it was used educational legislations that mentioned the domestic economy throughout the 19th and 20th century, State Law No. 242 of 1948, the curricula produced by ESCD, the student newspapers O Bonde e A Paineira, and the speeches of the related subject teachers. With the help of aforementioned texts and under the historiographical orientation of the concepts of representation by Roger Chartier and Joan Scott’s gender, the proposal was to understand the representations of the feminine from the domestic economist.
