Feminist Philosophy of Technology: origins, history, issues
Keywords: Philosophy of Technology. Feminism. Feminist Philosophy. Feminist Philosophy of Technology
This master dissertation highlights some feminist debates that intertwine with the thematic of women, gender, and technology. Attentively looking into the publications related to the introduction of the Philosophy of Technology, it is verified that the literature in regard to this subfield does not present, in a considerable way, issues about technology from a gender or a feminist perspective. Considering the aforementioned verification and based on a literature review, this research presents a history of the initial development and the institutionalization of feminist debates in regard to technology, between the 1970s and 1990s. Within this period of time, in which the second feminist wave took place, it is verified that the feminist studies of the technology consist of the existence and coexistence of several different themes. From an approach that begins with an analysis of technical artifacts, the following topics stand out: investigations about the technology in the women’s workplace (1970s), reproductive technologies (1980s), and gender co-production and technology (1990s). Concurrently, other movements and studies based on scientific and technological values were also being developed. This approach is compromised by the ecofeminism (1970s), criticisms of the scientific methodology & epistemology (1980s), and masculinity and technology (1990s). This plurality of discussions can be found, mainly, in feminist publications of journals and anthologies of articles, and indicates the Feminist Philosophy of Technology constitution. The plurality of debates indicates that this area, which has not been widely addressed in Brazil, represents a combination of the Philosophy of Technology, the Philosophy of Science, and the Feminist Philosophy.
