SUMMARY:

The main objective of this dissertation was to deal with the professional education discourse of the União Popular, an Association of Lay Catholics in São João Del Rei, in the period between the years 1908 to 1928. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century,with the advent of modernity, economic, technological and socio-cultural transformations took place. At this moment, facing the industrial and urban development we have the entrance of the Catholic Church with the publication of Pope Leo XIII's RerumNovarum, set of doctrines that deal with social issues arising from the abuses of the new forms of industrial expansion work. Based on this publication, the Catholic Church undertook efforts to combat the advancement of conceptions arising from modernity, such as liberalism and socialism. In this perspective, the Catholic Church was against these conceptions and presented to the world the discourse of Social Catholicism as an alternative to the social issues of the modern world. Social Catholicism was a project to restore Catholic principles in the modern world that was spread throughout Europe and also in Brazil. In Minas Gerais, in the city of São João Del Rei, we have the implementation of this project of Social Catholicism through the União Popular Associação de Católicos. This Association founded by Statute and Program developed actions and strategies aimed at professional education for the formation of the marginalized in society. União Popular worked with professional education in the city of São João Del Rei through the High School of Arts and Crafts. It offered a professional education with a Christian principle focused on work to meet the demands of industrial and urban development in São João Del Rei – State of Minas Gerais. What was intended was to understand and analyze how and why an Association of Lay Catholics, the Popular Union of São João Del Rei, mobilized in favor of professional education in the period 1908-1928.
