SUMMARY:

Inserted in “Line I: Science, Technology and Labour: Philosophical, Historical and Sociological Approach” of the Post-Graduation Program at Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica de Minas Gerais (CEFET-MG), this qualitative dissertation shows the motivations for school dropout in a course of professional formation, specifically at Construction Management Course (GO), offered by Engineering Program Studies of Society and Technology (PROGEST) of CEFET-MG. Starting from the following guiding question: "How to explain the high dropout rates at the Construction Management Course?", this research aims to know the point of view, not just from the course managers’, volunteers instructors, professors, and/or the theories about dropout, but also, and mainly, from the professionals’, who dropouts a free course, which is related to their professional career, for which they had applied and conquered a place through a selection process. The general objective of this research is to raise the motivations for the dropout at GO course offered by PROGEST. The specific objectives are: 1) to verify if the limit between the reasons alleged by the students for the dropout approximates or withdraws from the hypotheses raised by volunteers instructors, professors and coordinators of the aforementioned course; 2) to raise the students' view of the pedagogy adopted in the course; 3) to find out if there is a relation between the dropout and the pedagogy adopted by the course. To this purpose, informal conversations were held with the coordinators and instructors/professors and semi-structured interviews with former students of the course, which were analyzed by the French perspective of discourse analysis. The research project was submitted to the Research Ethics Committee of CEFET-MG and approved through the Certificate of Presentation for Ethical Appreciation - CAAE nº 37665920.7.0000.8507. This research is based on Michel Foucault’s and Paulo Freire’s research lines. Based on the theoretical reference and on the conditions of production of the sayings, it was decided to analyze the excerpts in three thematic axes: 1) personal motives; 2) reasons related to the course and 3) reasons related to the pedagogy adopted. The results obtained show that, in part, the reasons were already foreseen by the course coordinator. Some were related to the course and others were personal. None of them were related to the pedagogy applied in the course. Besides, it was also possible to see neoliberal rationality in a transversal way in most of those reasons.
