SUMMARY:

The main objective of the present work is to demonstrate the importance of the French Philosophy of Technique, which is marginalized in the commonly disseminated narratives about the origin and development of the Philosophy of Technique/Technology. From this, we sought to recognize the original contribution of the multidisciplinary thinking of the French polymath André Leroi-Gourhan (1911-1986), in order to identify an anthropological understanding of the development of the technique. The French thinker apprehends the human phenomenon in a comprehensive way, using the possibilities of different areas of knowledge, in order to understand the existing interaction between technique and language, the relationship between the cultural and natural elements and the conceptualization of the social body as an extension of the anatomical body. These intents culminate in the understanding of techniques as a human undertaking present in all its evolution and its driving force. The locus of this research is located in the following question: “what is the role of technique, from the philosophical-anthropological point of view of Leroi-Gourhan, in the formation and evolution of Homo sapiens?”. In the body of work, it was suggested 1) highlight the different understandings of the terms “technique” and “technology” throughout history; 2) present the main narratives about the origin and development of the Philosophy of technique/technology; 3) rescue the importance of French production for the development of the Philosophy of Technique; 4) understand the concepts of technical means, technical fact, technical tendency and technical set present in Leroi-Gourhan's thought; 5) analyze the main works of Leroi-Gourhan, regarding the evolution of hominids: The Gesture and the Word (Tomes I and II) and Evolution and Techniques (Tomes I and II); 5) distinguish and conceptualize the terms technique and technology, from the point of view of the French philosophical tradition. 6) demonstrate the relationship between technique and human evolution, as well as between technique and language, from the perspective of Leroi-Gourhan. The main contribution of the research concerns the highlighting of different analyzes on technique/technology, in order to rescue the French contributions and the possibility of including the French polymath in the list of authors studied in the professional and technological education curricula, in order to collaborate to promote greater robustness to the epistemological statute of the Philosophy of technique/technology in Brazil.
