SUMMARY:

This research aimed to identify the prior knowledge of Physiotherapists about the concept of metaphors and if, and how, they record the metaphors of the patients' narratives when carrying out the interview in the anamnesis. This dissertation is part of the Master's Degree in Technological Education at CEFET-MG, in Research Line IV – Educational Practices in Science and Technology. The theoretical references used were Lakoff and Johnson (1980, 1999, 2002); Sontag (1984, 1989, 2007); Sardine (2007); Loyola (2007) and Bardin (1977, 2016). The methodology of this investigation is characterized as a case study, with a qualitative approach, with a bibliographic and documentary nature. The data collection method adopted was a semi-structured questionnaire applied online to nine Physiotherapists and a documental study of 19 Physiotherapy patient records from two public institutions, Federal and Municipal. The results indicate that Physiotherapists have previous knowledge about metaphors when they elaborate coherent conceptual units and present examples of metaphors related to the health of patients, in addition to other metaphors in a general sense. Physiotherapists understand that the use of metaphors could be a communication resource that helps patients to express the signs and symptoms of the disease and serve as clues for the physiotherapeutic diagnosis because it is loaded with singularities and subjectivities, and they agree that there is some relationship between clinical and colloquial language. Physical therapists use handwritten anamnesis through standardized forms and consider that the colloquial language used by patients has some relationship with the technical terms used by health professionals. The perceptions presented by the Physiotherapists about the linguistic expressions used by the patients present an approximation with the idea pointed out in the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) by Lakoff and Johnson. They understand that the metaphorical expressions present in the patients' speech contribute to the interpretation of the physical therapy diagnosis because it is how the patient manages to translate the subjective aspects and feelings that arise from the personal experience with the disease. In the medical records, technical records and potentially metaphorical expressions (metaphorical candidates) were found that allow for an approximation with TMC. It was also found that Physiotherapists used metaphorical expressions to represent the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic. It is concluded that the expressions used by patients to represent signs and symptoms of diseases have an approximation to CMD, which allows us to infer that the metaphors used in the anamnesis serve as clues for the physical therapy diagnosis, since the subjectivation of the disease and their representations through metaphorical language deserve due attention during the clinical narratives of physical therapy patients.
