SUMMARY:

This dissertation focuses on approaches to work, the relationship between school and work and professional and technical education in Fernando de Azevedo's writings published in Portuguese. The research presents the professional trajectory of Fernando de Azevedo, highlighting his main actions in Brazilian education. The works written by Fernando de Azevedo were separated and categorized due to the variety of their thematic repertoire. The primary sources of research consisted of two of his works, Public education in São Paulo: problems and discussions (1937) and The Brazilian culture (1943). Some questions were proposed in order to guide the research: what are the elaborations on education and work? what are the approaches to professional education and its place in the national education system? In this sense, an attempt was made to analyze the elaborations on school and work, education for work and professional and technical education in the writings of Fernando de Azevedo from 1926 to 1943. Regarding the method, the material was analyzed from a documental and bibliographical perspective. . Regarding the treatment of sources, the references were the history of intellectuals, discourse analysis. On the history of intellectuals, the reference was Jean - François Sirinelli. The discourse analysis references came from Eni Puccinelli Orlandi. The research was also based on the notion of intellectual mediator, put forward by Ângela de Castro Gomes and Patrícia Santos Hansen. Fernando de Azevedo, from Sirinelli's (2003) perspective, was an educational intellectual engaged with the process of forming a national education system. Fernando de Azevedo's trajectory demonstrates his intense participation as a public figure, in positions, in movements, associations, writing for newspapers. The results obtained demonstrate that professional education occupied a significant space in Fernando de Azevedo's repertoire of educational elaborations in the two books consulted in this research. Fernando de Azevedo placed professional education in a horizon of expectations that combined industry and the urban as the locus of modern life.
