SUMMARY:

This dissertation has as its object of study students from Engineering courses at the Federal Center for Technological Education of Minas Gerais (CEFET-MG). An investigation was carried out that sought to evidence the racial proportion of students, as well as to understand the educational path of black students in Engineering courses at CEFET-MG, who had been admitted in the years 2012-2013, ans graduated in the year 2017. Strategies used for the academic training of black students were analyzed. Through an exploratory study, with qualitative and quantitative methods, the research also had diferente approaches such as documental source and bibliographical review, application of questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The analysis included successive categorizations of the information collected in order to validate the procedures, instruments and results. With a number of students enrolled in excess of 4,600, 75% of them were distributed among undergraduate courses in Industrial Automation Engineering, Mining Engineering, Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, Computer Engineering, Materials Engineering, Transport Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Civil Production Engineering, Civil Engineering, Control and Automation Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering. The CEFET-MG showed percentages below 38% among self-declared black students enrolled in these courses. The ethnic-racial disparity is evidenced by the average concentration of engineers/race, being white (77%), brown (19.9%) and black (3.1%). Based on the data analysis, it was possible to conclude that black students who graduated in Engineering in 2017, at CEFET-MG, were in smaller number. Even with the implementation of the Affirmative Action Law, inequalities persist regarding Engineers who had graduated rom CEFET-MG in 2017. More than that, the research sugests that, despite academic training and performance in the labor market, there is a tendency to reproduce income inequality between black graduates. The non-alteration of this profile, as far as engineering students are concerned, possibly contributes to the perpetuation of a historical inequity. The non-recognition of this inequity, widely rooted in Brazilian society, would aim to delegitimize the struggle of the black population for educational, political, cultural, social, economic and labor equality.
