SUMMARY:

The challenges for education are wide, in the current industrial revolution environment and specifically in its vertical of technological evolution. Particularly, engineers in Brazilian industry suffer important limitations for their development, some of them do not achieve the due success, in a market that demands constant knowledge updating. Others come up against the copious supply and dissemination of technology, causing professional obsolescence. Despite the commendable efforts to update the curriculum for training in Engineering, there are still schools that are outdated and without direction for the current moment, permeated by updates and the global dimension of the so-called Industry 4.0. This study aimed to understand the essential training skills, technical and human, thought in engineering courses, analyzing professional and technological education in Brazil and its harmony with innovations, pillars of the fourth industrial revolution. This objective was defined based on the research question: What are the basic skills for engineers to work in today's industry? We identified gaps in engineering education for the present world of industry, based on the assumption that the academy needs to provide a specialized technical body, presenting qualified professionals also in the use of business arts such as innovation, diagnosis, and proposition of actions. The results indicated that professionals and students sought complementary training to the engineering curriculum, in order to develop the skills required by today's society. The method used was the case study, characterized by qualitative evaluation, in organizations and schools through a semi-structured interview and a questionnaire carried out with 15 students and 15 engineers graduated from the main institutions of Minas Gerais. We check how the language of the company is aligned with that of the academic world. The business society demands practical and quick results, while the academy must be competent and participate in the development of broad, effective, and modern training instruments. From this study, we dialogue with the research previously carried out, on related topics, and we hope to collaborate with the academic discussions and, consequently, contribute to the construction of knowledge about technological education, considering its possibilities in the technical and, above all human, training of the professionals needed for ecosystem success: academia and industry.
