SUMMARY:

Work for children under sixteen was prohibited in 1988 by the Constitution of the Republic, except as an apprentice. The Professional Learning Program - PAP is regulated by the Labor Consolidation Laws, which underwent changes throughout history, and defined parameters for hiring adolescents, young people and adults, aged fourteen to twenty-four years. In addition to formal assisted work, the PAP is a professional training course, directly related to the Thematic Axis IV - Educational Practices and Educational Technologies. This study aims to understand the meaning attributed to work by students and graduates of the PAP in the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte, through qualitative research. Data collection took place in two stages, the first through questionnaires and interviews, and the second through a focus group. For data analysis and discussion, categories based on the researched literature were created. It was possible to verify, among other information, that the participants consider work a way to integrate and to correspond to a socially accepted lifestyle, which is considered by young people as a natural and fundamental path in their lives.
