In this dissertation, we propose to present the State of the Art of producing master's and doctoral dissertations in Brazilian stricto sensu postgraduate courses about the 19 School of Artificers Apprentices created in 1909 until they were renamed Industrial Lyceums in 1937. Two different types of research on this federal network of primary and free vocational schools appeared in the study, one at the general level focusing on the national context, and the other at the specific level focusing on the state context of the location of the schools. A total of 23 projects, 15 dissertations and 8 thesis, were selected from the 1980s to 2020s, including the first locations of the work. From the states of Bahia and Maranhão, respectively, one thesis and one dissertation were located, which, although they do not specifically address the schools in these states, dedicate part of the research to them. No productions were found regarding the schools in Pernambuco and Piauí. Besides the gap regarding the four schools, no State of the Art work on the School of Artificers Apprentices, indicating the need to address the demand and fill the gap regarding the issue, in order to produce organized knowledge about the studies already conducted on the subject. The research problem proposes to discuss: what does the knowledge production reveal about these schools in the dissertations and theses defended in stricto sensu postgraduate programs in Brazil from 1980 to 2020? From this corpus, source, and research object, based on Bardin's content analysis (2016), four categories of analysis emerged: school spaces, school agents (directors, teachers, and workshop masters), school subjects (apprentices), school times, and school knowledge. In the corpus, it was identified that in the execution of the Schools' functionalities, there were difficulties such as a lack of qualified personnel and a curriculum framework for courses and workshops, inappropriate buildings, as well as school dropout and repetition. It was also observed that, in general, the production analyses the relationship between what was proposed in the legislation and the implementation of the schools, based on the social, political, and economic dynamics that led to their creation and the transformations that occurred in the transition period from the Empire (free labour) to the Republic (wage labour). Furthermore, the researchers' approaches allowed us to understand that, despite their genesis as a federal system of vocational education, the schools had peculiar aspects that corresponded to the local context, and they were not always able to follow the legal prescriptions. Due to the breadth and complexity presented by the proposed topic for discussion, a possible synthesis of the answers obtained in this research could be one that attempts to express the trajectory of these schools as educational institutions created in a tangle of interests and changes in the country, which experienced difficulties in carrying out their functionalities, ultimately leading to their transformation into Industrial Lyceums. Therefore, this dissertation consists of an exercise in synthesis, an initial effort to systematize this knowledge that does not exhaust the possibility of further analysis on what has already been produced regarding these schools.
