Why Nietzsche Makes Sense in Philosophy of Technology
Nietzsche; Technology; Philosophy of Technology; Modernity
This dissertation explores the intersections between Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche and the Philosophy of Technology. The study arises from the observation that the author’s name either does not appear or is only discreetly present in introductory reference works in this field of knowledge. Conversely, specialized studies already acknowledge Nietzsche as a philosopher who contemplated technology. To this end, we present a concise discussion of the term “technology” and its embryonic usage in 19th-century Germany. Subsequently, Chapter I investigates the presence of this German thinker in the Philosophy of Technology, drawing on analyses by McGinn (1980), Ommeln (2006), Maffezzini (2008), Oliveira (2016), Gerdardt (2017), and Gertz (2018). Finally, Chapter II demonstrates that themes related to the Philosophy of Technology permeate all phases of Nietzsche’s thought. In the first phase, we examine the relationship between rationality and technique; in the second phase, we explore the social implications of technology on modern society; and in the third phase, we explore the relationship between technology and nihilism. This analysis leads us to conclude that technology was a consistent concern throughout the German philosopher´s body of work. In the final remarks, we demonstrate how this aspect of Nietzsche´s thought can contribute to Technological Education.
