SUMMARY:

With the changes occurring in the world, education needs to respond to the new demands arising in society. Among these demands is the need for a more comprehensive education for engineering professionals regarding cross-cutting skills. It is essential to promote the integral education of these professionals through the development of meaningful learning strategies. In this context, EdTechs (education and technology), startups focused on developing technological solutions for education, have emerged as a new learning model and an alternative to fill a possible gap left by higher education. This master dissertation examined the competencies that the market has been demanding from engineering professionals and how EdTechs have contributed to the education of engineers in this scenario. A qualitative approach was conducted through the application of structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 15 engineers to deepen their understanding of the development of engineer competencies, how these complementary formations contributed to their professional development, and the role of EdTechs in this context. Content analysis was used for data analysis and interpretation. The results indicated a paradigm shift in the competencies required of engineers, with a growing emphasis on non-technical skills. Professionals seeking to excel and thrive in the engineering market must recognize the importance of developing these soft skills and apply them in conjunction with their technical knowledge. Additionally, it was evident that engineering education still has a long way to go to fully align with market needs, requiring curriculum revisions that include a significant emphasis on the development of non-technical skills. Finally, it was noted that the definition of EdTechs was not limited to educational technology companies but also included regulatory bodies, professional councils, and associations that offer opportunities for continuous learning. This identified how engineering professionals recognized the importance of continuous learning to stay updated and fill gaps left by academic education.
