SUMMARY:

Attitude can be defined as a tendency to respond favorably or unfavorably to an entity and plays an important role in achieving school goals and students' professional choices, especially in scientific-technological careers. Thus, this research aimed to analyze the attitudes of high school students towards Chemistry based on Eagly and Chaiken's Psychology of Attitudes. To this end, a descriptive-exploratory study was carried out through a field survey with students from two public schools: one for Basic Education and the other for Technical Education. Then, the translated Attitude toward the Subject of Chemistry Inventory, (ASCIv1) was used to measure the attitude of these populations towards Chemistry. The factorial validation of ASCIv1 demonstrated that its structure was composed, in this study, of four factors: (1) Interest and Utility, (2) Intellectual Accessibility, (3) Anxiety and (4) Emotional Satisfaction. Furthermore, the factors extracted are consistent with the affective, cognitive and behavioral dimensions of attitude defended by Eagly and Chaiken. In general, the Basic Education and Technical Education populations have a favorable attitude towards Chemistry, with a significant effect of the teaching modality on this profile being observed. Regarding the verification of the effect of age group, education level and gender on students' attitudes towards Chemistry, no significant effects were observed. Conducted in a culturally and linguistically different context, this research provides evidence that the ASCIv1 can be used to measure attitudes towards Chemistry in the Brazilian context. The possibility of measuring students' attitudes toward this school subject provides an additional lens for guiding meaningful teaching and learning practices and curricular modifications in education systems.
