SUMMARY:

This dissertation problematized the participation of researcher/scientist teachers in mathematical areas, highlighting the sexual division of labor in STEM areas (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), historical invisibility, the challenges and obstacles faced by them, as well as their strategies of struggle and resistance, especially to achieve professional ascension and positions of prestige and power in academia. Social indicators and various researches have shown that mathematics, as an area of study and teaching, is one of the ones with the least participation of women, students and teachers, a reflection of segregation mechanisms that exclude them from the academic career in question, contributing to the maintenance of social relations of sex/gender from the permanent gender division of labor in this area. Thus, this research aimed to unveil and bring to the academic debate the phenomenon of female participation in the mathematical scientific career, in order to contribute to the understanding of the gender division of labor in STEM areas, a topic still little prestigious in Professional and Technological Education research. For this, we sought to historically contextualize the androcentrism of the area, apprehend the construction of the careers of researcher/scientist teachers, through their training and professional trajectory, and analyze the existing sexist mechanisms, as well as their coping and resistance strategies. Indeed, this is a qualitative research, whose empirical locus chosen was the Mathematics Department of the Federal University of Minas Gerais and the subjects, three researcher/scientist teachers located in the aforementioned sector. The methodological procedures for data production were: (i) bibliographic review on the themes and indicators relevant to the approach of the proposed object of study, (ii) documentary survey of sector records and (iii) semi-structured interviews that, together, were analyzed in the light of the theory of the gender division of labor, originating from French Work Sociology, whose bases are anchored in the theory of French materialist feminism (FMF). The results obtained throughout this dissertation point to the permanence of explicit and implicit sexist mechanisms, which prove to be one of the main factors responsible for perpetuating the underrepresentation of women in the mathematical scientific career. However, it is worth noting that the women inserted in this unequal scenario, face and resist daily this complex social plot, mobilizing varied strategies of individual and collective struggle, thus advancing in favor of “policies for damage reduction”. Therefore, it is expected to contribute to generate reflections about the studied phenomenon, even though evidencing the fact that gender equality in the mathematical environment, historically male, will still be far from being achieved.
