SUMMARY:

The history of the Western world of work is marked by the subjugation of women, linking them to domestic and familial roles. Only after the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century did women begin to be effectively included in the world of work and to fight for political and social rights. Despite this inclusion and advances toward equity, gender inequality in the world of work persists, manifested in lower wages and fewer opportunities for women. In the educational sphere, this logic of subjugation and gender inequality has also been reproduced. Women have faced and still face obstacles to accessing quality and equal education, especially in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. The lack of encouragement and representation in these areas also reflects in basic education, contributing to the lower interest of girls who are often directed towards fields considered more "suitable" for the female gender. In the Rede Estadual de Ensino de Minas Gerais, this situation is exacerbated by the lack of public policies and lack of specific data about female students in high school, highlighting the need to better understand how girls are perceived by the education system and how the girls perceive their own social and educational reality. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the interest and motivation of female students from the Rede Estadual de Ensino de Minas Gerais in STEM areas. Through a case study at Escola Estadual Professor Hilton Rocha, the factors that still reproduce a gender segregating logic and keep girls away from these areas are examined, as well as the factors that can encourage them to develop an interest in STEM. The impacts of factors such as historical, cultural, and social context of gender inequality are explored, as well as the influence of family, media, and school on girls' choices in the mentioned areas. As a result, the study seeks to provide insights into how girls are influenced in their educational choices, especially regarding STEM areas, stimulating the creation and strengthening of public policies aimed at gender equality in the Rede Estadual de Ensino de Minas Gerais.
