SUMMARY:

Water quality is a fundamental aspect with regard to its use. The Rio das Velhas Basin, located in the state of Minas Gerais, presents water quality parameters that do not comply with environmental legislation. Thus, an efficient management of water resources is necessary in order to guarantee water quality. In this context, water quality models have been used as an alternative to assist in the planning and decision making of the basin. Among the various models, QUAL2Kw presents itself as an efficient tool in the simulation of water quality. In this sense, this research aims to simulate the water quality of the Rio das Velhas Basin using the QUAL2Kw model, seeking to support the basin planning, in terms of interventions aimed at improving water quality. From a preliminary diagnostic study of the water quality of the Rio das Velhas Basin, it was found that there are some stretches that present water quality parameters, such as: BOD, OD, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus and chlorophyll a, in non-compliance with CONAMA Resolution 430/11. Thus, it is intended to simulate the quality of water throughout the entire Rio das Velhas, proposing scenarios that involve structural and / or structuring measures. First, the model will be calibrated and validated, considering the current scenario of the basin. Then, simulations will be made with possible future scenarios, considering interventions aimed at improving water quality. It is hoped that this study can support the planning and management of the basin, thus promoting the improvement of water quality.
