SUMMARY:

Operational modal analysis or OMA can be defined as an experiment that allows the estimation of modal parameters such as natural frequency, damping and Shapes of vibration through the vibration responses of the structure in service. The advantage of making use of natural excitations such as wind, traffic and small tremors, makes the method quick and inexpensive, since it does not require the use of costly artificial excitations in large civil structures. The present work aims to present the modal operational analysis of a reinforced concrete arch railway bridge built in the 60s. Initially the bridge will be modeled using finite elements method to obtain the analytical modal parameters and to be used to plan the location of the accelerometers at strategic points. With field measurements and the use of frequency domain decomposition (FDD), the natural frequencies of the structure are estimated. By the direct relationship between the stiffness of the structure and the inverse relationship with the mass, the last one obtained by the dimensions of the structure, the experimental natural frequencies allow several applications such as the model updating of numerical models, non-destructive damage assessment, vibration control and heath monitoring. After the restoration of one of the abutments of the bridge, new field essay will allow to obtain new modal parameters that will be compared to those previously obtained. It is expected that this research can prove the importance of modal operational analysis as a complementary tool to certify structural integrity, as well as contribute to the rehabilitation and monitoring of these structures.
