SUMMARY:

The cement industry is responsible for the emission of 5 to 8% of CO2 from the planet, mainly due to the large consumption of energy and the volume of emissions inherent to the production of clinker, the main constituent of Portland cement. Mineral additions are sustainable alternatives to reduce these impacts, as they improve some properties of cementitious materials and can be used as a partial replacement for cement, thus reducing clinker consumption. Sugar cane bagasse ash (SCBA) is an addition alternative as it is a residue from the sugar and alcohol industry rich in amorphous silica, which can lead to improvements in the properties of cementitious materials. The present study aims to evaluate the effects of the incorporation of SCBA, from two distinct bioclimatic zones, on the mechanical properties and durability of mortars. The ashes were collected, milled in a ceramic ball mill for one hour, burned in an oven under the temperature of 650 oC for 3 hours and at a heating rate of 10 oC per minute. The pozzolanic activity of the SCBA samples, originating from two distinct bioclimatic zones, will be evaluated through the Performance Index, Modified Chapelle and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) tests. The pozzolanic activity index of the two types of sample may be one of the indicators of the influence of the bioclimatic zone on the SCGA. The setting times of the pastes and the mortar consistency index will be studied through the start and end time and flow table tests, respectively. Mortar dosages will be molded with 10%, 20% and 30% substitution (by volume) of cement by the two types of SCBA for the following tests: resistance to axial compression at 28 and 90 days; tensile strength at 28 days; determination of the water absorption index by immersion, voids index and specific mass. The research is expected to find an indication of the influence of the bioclimatic zones of sugar cane production on the mechanical performance and durability of cementitious materials with replacement of cement by SCBA.
