SUMMARY:

The generation of waste is increasing dramatically due to population growth, urbanization and economic development, especially in developing countries. The management of Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW), a significant portion of solid waste, is increasingly a critical challenge in the search for economic, social and environmental sustainability. For the correct destination and increased recycling of this waste, an efficient CDW management network is required. This research aims to develop a network model for the management of Construction and Demolition Waste for the current scenario and also to design the network for a panorama of expansion of the municipality, using the city of Varginha / MG as a case study. The proposed methodology involves four steps. The first is to map the points of irregular deposition of CDW and the main construction areas of the municipality. Then, a method will be presented using Geographic Information System (GIS) to determine the CDW management network with the indication of suitable locations for installing infrastructure, namely, Voluntary Delivery Points (VDP) and Transhipment and Sorting Areas (TSA) based on the current scenario. In the third stage, geographical, economic and social characteristics of Varginha's historical series will be surveyed in order to forecast the expansion of the municipality. Finally, based on this forecast, the CDW management network will be evaluated and revised considering aspects related to the growth of the city (amount of CDW generated, distances from the generation points to the network infrastructure and variation in the cost of the land containing infrastructure of the network of management). It is expected that the results of this research model will contribute to the development of efficient CDW management networks and that they will foresee the demands of medium-sized cities, contributing to the appropriate destination of Construction and Demolition Waste.
