SUMMARY:

In Brazil, standardized houses have flaws in several aspects, especially regarding environmental comfort. As a solution, this study proposes the incorporation of phase change materials (PCM) in housing unit’s envelopes. PCMs are capable of absorbing and dissipating significant amounts of heat, maintaining thermal comfort in buildings. Considering PCMs perform worse in hot climates, this study carried out a systematic literature review to assess PCM applications into residential buildings located in climates similar to the coldest regions of Brazil. The results indicated that the PCMs have great potential to improve thermal comfort and energy consumption in residential buildings in southern and part of southeastern of Brazil. Subsequently, the thermal performance of a representative terrace single storey housing project was evaluated under weather conditions of Curitiba-PR, Santa Maria-RS and São Paulo-SP, according to the simulation method of NBR 15,575-1:2021. The results indicated inadequate thermal performance of this house for the climate, as well the need for adjustments of the current Brazilian envelope systems to enable the proper incorporation of PCM. A next step of analysis will be carried out to assess the thermal performance of a second housing model with five floors, as well as the impact of PCMs in improving the thermal performance on both models. This work presents, therefore, a practical contribution, by proving the low thermal performance of HIS in Brazilian subtropical climates, and an academic contribution, by exploring the applicability of PCMs in housing in the South and part of Southeastern Brazil. From this study, it is expected that further research will be carried out to evaluate PCM-enhanced buildings in Brazil to promote their use widely in the national territory.
