SUMMARY:

In the last few decades, the construction sector has experienced intense development, culminating in large amounts of waste, specially derived from demolition and construction activities. Part of the environmental pollution is caused by the construction waste, mainly due to the lack of guidelines for residues proper disposal. The construction industry is continuously searching for material innovation, performance gain, cost reduction and sustainability. The use of the recycled fine aggregate, made from construction and demolition waste, could be incorporated in the mortars composition, as long as the mechanical strength decrease issue was solved. In this sense, small additions of graphene oxide (GO) could have potential to improving the mechanical performance and durability of mortars. The improvement in mortars composite recycled aggregate and graphene oxide related on mechanical properties and durability can guarantee a longer lifespan, becoming interested for laying ceramic tiles on facades, for example, corroborating the reduction of expenses with futures maintenance and  decrease in the natural resources depletion still available. This work evaluates the mechanical and durability properties of mortars, modified with recycled aggregates and graphene oxide, through compressive, tensile, flexural strength tests and chloride ion penetration tests.
