SUMMARY:

Water resources are indispensable for various human activities and their importance is highlighted in the preservation of public health, economic development, leisure activities and the maintenance of environmental balance. Over the last few years, the availability of surface waters has changed due to changes in the land use and soil of hydrographic basins. Climate change is also pointed out as strong factors that modify components of the hydrological cycle and, in turn, surface runoff. Therefore, knowledge of changes in the flow regime of a watercourse, as well as the causes that caused them, are extremely relevant for the maintenance of aquatic ecosystems as well as for the preservation of environmental services provided by rivers. Headwater regions are especially sensitive to changes in land use and occupation and may suffer from climate change. Thus, the objective of this research is to quantify the impacts of climate change and land use and occupation in the flow regime in stretches of Alto Paraíba do Sul. This basin is responsible for supplying water to the city of Rio de Janeiro and plays an important role in economic activities in the Southeast region of Brazil. For this research, Indicators of Hydrological Alterations (IHA) will be used and the periods of trend change in hydrological data will be quantified using the Mann-Kendall test. Using the intended results, it is possible to promote relevant information for the correct management of water resources in this region, aiming to promote the evaluation of the necessary actions to maintain the integrity of this ecosystem in order to guarantee its permanent use in an ecological, social, and economically viable.
