RESUMO:

The objective of this research is to analyze the reinterpretation developed by Grupo Galpão in the idealization, production, staging and filming of Romeo and Juliet in Praça do Papa. I was irremediably attracted by this production mainly because of the lightness and joy achieved with the blend of comic elements into an intrinsically tragic text. The artifice of Grupo Galpão was reached through the integration of circus features, commedia dell'arte and music to the Shakespearean script. In the conception, assembly, staging and filming of the play, it is possible to identify readings that refer to different types of translation, or as Haroldo de Campos would like, transvaloração. The work produced by Group Galpão evokes transpositions of different languages that go far beyond, to the not always simple, version from one language to another. Therefore, the main issues of this research are related to language studies and translation. The corpora on which the study was based are compounded by the original Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet (1978) in English; the translation of the play to Portuguese made by Pennafort (1940); the re-reading provided by Brandão (2007) for street theater and the filming of the play by Grupo Galpão (2012).
