SUMMARY:
Photography has always caught my attention, so I decided to become a photographer and later turn my academic studies to that same area. This interest in the study of the image took place during the undergraduate course and led me to go even deeper into the master's degree. Therefore, with this research I will seek analysis of the book Terra, by the photographer of Minas Gerais Sebastião Salgado. This book was published in 1997 and has 109 black and white photographs that portray the struggle of all Brazilians for land, but its main focus is the Landless Movement (MST). My intention with this research, then, is to understand how Sebastião Salgado's photographic narrative mobilizes, based on various semiotic extracts, representations that integrate a discursive memory associated with the struggle for life and also for the land. For this, we will seek to carry out a photographic and textual analysis through the studies of the Discourse Analysis of Maingueneaue and Charaudeau (2012). Therefore, to understand how the non-verbal and the verbal, together, signal a discursive memory and awaken imaginary, we will use the concept of discursive memory proposed by Courtine (2011). In addition, an analysis of the iconic, plastic elements will be made in the light of Barthes (1980) and Joly (2012). Thus, through this research, we hope to notice how Salgado builds, through his photographs and captions, a collective imagination about reality. And it tries, in this way, to marry the construction of this imaginary through non-verbal and verbal elements (image and text).
