SUMMARY:

The objective of this research is to analyze the reinterpretation developed by Grupo Galpão in the idealization, production, setting, and filming of Romeo and Juliet. I was irremediably attracted by this production mainly because of the lightness and joy achieved with combining comedy with an intrinsically tragic play. The strategy of Grupo Galpão was reached through the integration of circus, commedia dell’arte and clowning elements, as well as Brazilian music to the Shakespearean script. In Romeu e Julieta, by Grupo Galpão, it is possible to identify readings that refer to the acculturation of the English script in a Brazilian play production resulting from a cultural anthropophagy, as Oswald de Andrade would like or transcriação, according to the Theory of Haroldo de Campos. The work produced by the theater group from Minas Gerais evokes transpositions into different languages that go far beyond the – not always simple – version from one language to another. The main questions of this research are related to translation and language studies. For, although the Shakespearean script was maintained through a translation into Portuguese, very faithful to the original in the English language, the production reflects the originality provided by the different languages used in Romeu e Julieta, by Grupo Galpão. The corpus on which the study was based is composed of the DVD Romeu e Julieta na Praça do Papa, 2012; the original Shakespearean script, in English Language; the translation of the original into Portuguese language by Pennafort (1940) and Romeu e Julieta, a re-reading by Brandão (2007) for the street theater.
