SUMMARY:

This research has as its theme the History textbook in the context of the National Book and Didactic Material Program (PNLD), more specifically the view of both teachers and students on this material. The research proposal seeks to analyze in the speech of these subjects what evaluations they make of the History textbook and what experiences are built in the relationships of use of this material. Furthermore, it is also the objective of this work proposal to compare the speeches of these subjects with the PNLD textbook guide in an attempt to understand the similarities and divergences built around the use of this material. For this work, teachers and students from Elementary II and High School were selected from public schools of municipal and state education located in the city of Belo Horizonte. In order to collect the data, I used field observation as the first procedure, followed by an interview with the teachers and ended with the application of questionnaires to the students. The analysis of all the empirical material collected was driven by the question that guides this research, that is, to perceive and analyze the speeches that teachers and students build on and from the use of the History textbook based on the linguistic analysis of their sayings, as well as the comparison of these speeches with the reviews of the works in the Textbook Guides. For this purpose, the speeches about the uses of History textbooks collected through interviews (teachers) and questionnaires (students) were analyzed from the lexical items and/or the linguistic constructions present in the sayings of these actors in accordance with the proposal of analysis presented by Martin and White (2005) and Martin and Rose (2007), the Appraisal and Ideation Systems, in a systemic functional perspective of language. In the concept of Applied Linguistics (MOITA LOPES, 2008), I sought to analyze the discourses built around the History textbook by the actors who give meaning to their existence, understanding its multiple meanings of uses and expanding the possibility of a more critical view of the role that this material plays in the pedagogical practices of the daily classroom, without disregarding the social circumstances in which the school is positioned. The results show that the History textbook is used, on its great majority, for readings and activities. The students recognize the importance of this material in their learning process, and mostly express positive evaluations. The teachers evaluate and use books from their perspectives on teaching History. The data collected here allow us to conclude that the History textbook is often used in the classroom, is perceived as one of the most important objects of pedagogical support for teachers and the principal means of studying History by students. I hope that this research will contribute to understanding the importance of PNLD within the education and the need to maintain and improve this Program, which is constantly threatened by the current policy.
