A behind-the-scenes look at the production of English textbooks for Basic Education: the construction of representations on cross-cuttingthemes
Editorial production. English textbook. Basic Education. Cross-cutting themes. Systemic-Functional Linguistics.
In this research project, we propose a behind-the-scenes look at the production of English Textbooks for Basic Education. We have the objective to understand the experience of authors and/or editors in the elaboration of these materials, focusing on the stages in which they make choices to build representations on cross-cutting themes, that is, relevant social issues defined by the National Curriculum Parameters (PCNs). Due to this objective, interviews will be conducted with these professionals, in order to gather discourses that manifest the experiences they have in the social context in which they work and that involve aspects of their inner and outer world, understanding that these are factors that influence the editorial practices and the content that will be published in books. There by, for corpus analysis, we chose the theoretical scope of Systemic-Functional Linguistics, using specifically the ideational metafunction of language and the category of processes in the transitivity system. Then, we intend to show how the practices of these professionals produce meanings in the knowledge that will be transmitted in classrooms and, mainly, to highlight the complexity of the processes that occur in this scenario, especially through the use of language.
