SUMMARY:

Research on the linguistic education of the deaf is often approached from the perspective of hearing individuals. However, this master's thesis proposes a differentiated approach, seeking to understand and analyze real situations experienced by deaf adults through the collection of discourses via forms and interviews. The central question that guided this research was: How do deaf adults perceive and experience their linguistic education, considering the duality between the Portuguese language and Brazilian Sign Language (Libras)? Based on this inquiry, the objectives of this investigation are comprehensive. Initially, we sought to analyze the teaching and learning conditions of deaf students in regular basic education, identifying methods, techniques, practices, and didactic resources that may not adequately meet their specific needs. Additionally, the research aims to identify the difficulties faced by deaf individuals in the process of learning written Portuguese and the strategies used to overcome these limitations. Evaluating compliance with current laws related to the education of the deaf, analyzing the role of family and other groups in the process of learning written Portuguese, and examining the effectiveness of current educational policies and practices are also crucial objectives of this dissertation. The methodology employed in this research was qualitative, aiming to deepen the understanding of the linguistic experiences of deaf adults. To collect data, interviews were conducted with six volunteer participants. Of these, three were conducted in Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), which were later translated into Portuguese for analysis, and the other three were conducted through forms. This diversified approach allowed for a balanced analysis between data in Libras and written Portuguese. The presented data reveal a diversity of experiences and perceptions related to compliance with educational laws for the deaf, as well as the influence of family on the development of written language by deaf individuals. Issues such as satisfaction with proficient Libras interpreters, the need for adaptation of tests and activities, disagreement regarding inclusive schools, and the importance of proper training for interpreters emerge as crucial topics. The implications of this study are significant, highlighting the need for improvement in the educational system to meet the specific needs of the deaf, including ensuring accessibility, proper training for teachers and interpreters, as well as greater awareness and support from families. In this research, the social and semiotic perspective proposed by Systemic Functional Linguistics (HALLIDAY, 1985, 1994, 2004) was adopted. As a specific theory for corpus analysis, the evaluative system (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005; MARTIN; ROSE, 2003) was used, which addresses how authorial voices evaluate the aspects and phenomena experienced through their linguistic choices.
