BODY OF AUTHOR: A performative Reading of Vaga carne, by Grace Passô
Authorship; theater; performativity; body; rites; Grace Passô.
This research is about authorship construction through playwriter and performer Grace Passô’s body, who is from the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We argue that in her play Vaga carne she constructs a body of author and performs a text-image function in the discourse. In order to carry that out, this research explores the concept of author and authorship in three ways, goes through considerations about the scope of performance and rites, reflecting on performance writing and performative theater; it also analyzes some aspects of the work, named protocols. They are four: protocol of a racialized body; protocol of a gendered body; protocol of a body with social class marks; and protocol of a future body. This is a bibliographical research based on authors including Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes, Leonardo Villa-Forte, Paul Zumthor, Judith Butler, John Austin, Luciana Salazar Salgado, Sara Rojo, Josette Féral, David Ball, Leda Maria Martins, and Jack Halberstam.
