SUMMARY:

This thesis, presented to the Graduate Program in Language Studies at CEFET-MG, aims to draw up a detailed history of business books printed and published in Portuguese in Brazil, covering the period from 1808 to 2000. The general objective is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the publishing production of business books in Brazil over almost two centuries. The specific objectives include identifying the main themes and subjects dealt with in these books, as well as identifying the authors, translators, publishers, and public and private institutions that played significant roles in the production, distribution, and dissemination of these books. The method used in the research was exploratory and descriptive in nature, adopting a qualitative approach. The main source of data was the collection of the National Library in Rio de Janeiro. The research was carried out using the advanced search in the library's collection, filtering out books in Portuguese published in Brazil between 1808 and 2000. To ensure a detailed and accurate analysis, the research included categorizing the books into different subjects and themes, as well as identifying the main players involved in publishing production, such as authors, translators, and publishers. The research revealed that the editorial production of business books in Brazil began with the installation of the Impressão Régia in 1808. This initial milestone was followed by significant growth in publishing production over the analyzed periods, especially from the second half of the twentieth century. The research identified a significant number of books focused on areas such as economics, administration, accounting, and commerce. Furthermore, the main publishers, authors, and translators who contributed to the development and consolidation of this editorial genre in Brazil were mapped. The analysis highlighted the evolution of themes and subjects addressed in business books, reflecting changes and transformations in the country's economic and business environment over the years. The thesis concludes that business books played a fundamental role in the formation and development of the Brazilian publishing market. These books not only contributed to the dissemination of business knowledge but also helped shape administrative practice and thought in Brazil. The research also highlighted the importance of public and private institutions in promoting and disseminating business knowledge. The political, economic, and technological transformations during the studied period directly influenced the evolution of business books in Brazil, contributing to the consolidation of a robust and diversified publishing market. The thesis suggests that the study of business books can provide valuable insights into the country's economic and administrative development, as well as contribute to the historical record of publishing in Brazil. By mapping the main actors and institutions involved in the production and dissemination of these books, the research highlights the importance of this editorial genre in the country's economic and administrative context, offering a solid foundation for future research and studies in publishing and book history.
