DEVELOPING WRITING SKILLS: case study in an online preparatory course to obtaining the Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners (Celpe-Bras)
Writing skills; Celpe-Bras preparatory course; Celpe-Bras exam.
Supported by the understanding that certain linguistic aspects are essential for successful performance in the Celpe-Bras exam, this study aims to investigate how the development of writing skills necessary for text production occurs among foreign students during their preparation for the exam, specifically focusing on the 2020 edition of the Celpe-Bras preparatory course at CEFET-MG, particularly the PEC-G candidates. These skills are evaluated according to pre-established criteria of the exam and are tied to the performance in the written test. The research seeks to answer the question: How does the development of writing skills occur among students in the online Celpe-Bras preparatory course? To address this, the written productions of three students were collected and analyzed using mock exams from previous Celpe-Bras editions throughout the eight-month virtual course in 2020. The study involved the description of tasks for each mock exam, analyzed the written productions in relation to the exam's guidelines, and examined them through the lens of the deictic phenomenon (FILLMORE, 1971). The Celpe-Bras construct served as the guiding framework for analyzing linguistic elements, as well as the textual construction of each genre. It was also necessary to identify student progress based on Fillmore's (1971) five categories of deixis: personal deixis, spatial deixis, temporal deixis, social deixis, and discourse deixis. The initial results demonstrate that the development of writing skills can be observed based on the exam's parameters and the use of deixis in different text genres.
