The moral discourse about strength that legitimizes Pokémon captures and battles: a systemicfunctional discourse analysis of the game Pokémon Black
Systemic-functional multimodal discourse analysis, Moral discourse, Martial arts discourse, Pokémon.
The object of this study is the moral discourse on the strength of the game Pokémon Black (2011). The main objective is to analyze how this game conveys a certain moral discourse about the strength that legitimizes the practices of capturing pokémon and battling with them. The specific objectives are to analyze how the value of strength is represented, triggered in legitimations and linked to a certain moral discourse. The theory used is Van Leeuwen’s systemic-functional multimodal discourse analysis and the method used is a historical-discursive method. The result obtained is that the moral discourse of budo offers a coherent and consistent explanation for the moral discourse on the strength of Pokémon Black (2011) and that there is probably an identity relationship between them, since they both share the statements that battle is a means of obtaining, testing and comparing physical and spiritual strength; of deepening bonds between combatants; of uniting with the divine; and of pleasing the spirits of the dead.
