SUMMARY:

Based on the novel Torto arado, by Itamar Vieira Junior, this research traces a decolonial path through Brazilian history, identifying, with the help of the plays contained in the novel, the genesis of racism and the impact of colonialist remnants on interpersonal and structural relations in the country, portrayed in the community of Água Negra, which preserves the intricacies of archaic Brazil. Understanding that literature restores otherness, in this work we break with official narratives and adopt a perspective based on black epistemology to construct an analysis concerned with bringing to light the strategies of resistance that keep the memory and traditions of quilombola communities alive, present in the novel, highlighting the performance of Itamar Vieira Junior in the elaboration of the work. As a result of the analyses undertaken, this research problematizes the homogeneous concept of nation and, in view of the constitutive elements of the novel that are based on a decolonial perspective, we suggest a new category of narrator.
In this way, this research is an effort that joins other decolonial studies in proposing, from works of national literature, a black perspective that disrupts the image of national heroes and problematizes the official narratives of history.
In constructing this work, we rely on studies on necropolitics, developed by Mbembe (2018b), and coloniality, elaborated by Quijano (1992; 2005). In addition, the works of Almeida (2020), Sodré (2023) and Souza (2021) guided the analysis of racism and its implications. For reflections on jarê, memory and black traditions, the studies of Senna (1980; 1984), Banaggia (2013), Simas and Rufino (2018), Rufino (2019), Parizi (2020) and Martins (2021) were essential.
