BIG AREA: Lingüística, Letras e Artes
AREA: Letras
SUMMARY:

Our objective with this work was to collect and analyze the editorial processes and politics (which are named editorial strategies throughout this research) declared and implemented by the journals of the Brazilian area of Linguistics and Literature, their indexing in databases and the relationship the editorial teams have with their work. Despite having in its theoretical reference an interdisciplinary and a multidisciplinary approach, the discussions and thoughts developed in this work are centralized on the Applied Linguistics and on the relations of ethics and power (the ways in which the journals define the circulation of language in its editorial politics and guidelines and how this circulation materializes in the objects of communication research they publish). We conducted documentary research (an important set of national and international reference documents of editorial practices was used) as well as an extensive discussion related to the processes of the scientific edition and to the studies of and about journals in the fields of Linguistics and Literature and Humanities in general, especially the research in the emergent field of editing studies. Besides, quantitative and qualitative methods were used depending on how the data was collected. Our first set of data (structured and quantitative) refers to the general information collected about the journals, their politics and guidelines, and their presence in databases, in a total of 56 characteristics. The size of the corpus comprising 395 journals (Linguistics and Literature or related, online, and actively publishing) was consolidated in this step of the research. Our second set of data was collected from a form that was sent to all of the aforementioned journals and had 64 questions. Since the form had both open-ended and closed-ended questions, we were able to collect quantitative and qualitative, structured and unstructured data. Our third and last set of data was collected from 3 interviews conducted with members of editorial teams. We invited a selected number of journals to be interviewed, thus generating qualitative data. All of these three sets of data are available in an open access data repository, thus following Open Science practices. We highlight these conclusions that come from the discussions related to the presentation of the three sets of data and the reflections and analyses concerning to the editorial strategies: the editorial strategies are divided into five branches (administration, science, communication, edition, and politics); the work of the editorial teams, especially the editors-in-chief, should follow elements of ethics and power, being the latter responsible for the decisions made about the journal; the journals of the Linguistics and Literature area are not prepared to be evaluated concerning the Open Science aspects (especially, open data, preprints, open peer review and the publishing of open review reports); we did not identify any journal that charges APC, despite many of them not being clear about it (as some databases require it); there are plenty of opportunities for the journals to be indexed in databases, which only takes them to explicitly declare their editorial politics; statistically, there is a hyperconcentration of journals in the southeast and in the south of the country that is higher than the concentration of Post-graduation programs in the same regions; there is a strong need for a formal and institutional recognition of the time and work dedicated by the editorial teams to the journal, which should mean a reduction in other forms of work activities.
