This thesis investigates, within a media context related to politics, the construction of evaluations regarding the candidates in Brazil’s 2018 and 2022 presidential elections, as presented in two print publications. The core corpus for analysis consists of covers and cover stories from the weekly opinion-based news magazines Isto É and Veja. The period chosen for analysis corresponds to the weeks leading up to the first and second rounds of the presidential elections in 2018 and 2022. In total, the study examines eight covers and eight cover stories. The theoretical framework of the research is anchored in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), which understands language as a system in which individuals make choices to construct meaning (Neves, 2004), as well as in Multimodality, which considers all semiotic modes as equally important for meaning production, combined and integrated to fulfill specific purposes in each communicative situation. To investigate the evaluations, the study employs the categories of the Grammar of Visual Design (GVD) (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006), with an emphasis on the interpersonal meanings derived from the interpersonal metafunction, in addition to the Appraisal System (Martin & White, 2005; Martin & Rose, 2007), which constitutes a set of interpersonal meaning-making resources used as a tool for analyzing evaluation expressed through language. From the perspective of Discourse Analysis (DA), the study provides an overview of political media discourse in the context of the elections. The analysis first explores the linguistic and visual aspects of the corpus in light of the Appraisal System and GVD, respectively, with the aim of systematizing recurrent attitudes and evaluations. Subsequently, the study establishes a relationship between the meanings derived from the investigation. The results demonstrate both positive and negative evaluations of the candidates. Isto É proves to be more aggressive toward the PT (Workers' Party) in 2018, while in 2022, it positions itself in defense of democracy, condemns Bolsonaro, and adopts a moderate discourse regarding Lula. On the other hand, Veja directs criticism toward all candidates in both years. Particularly in 2018, the weekly magazine from Editora Abril prioritizes a focus on the political scenario, aiming at potential national pacification.
