THE CHOREOGRAPHY OF DRESSING:
fashion and gender in contemporary literature in portuguese.
fashion; contemporary literature; gender
This thesis presents a comparative analysis of four literary works to explore different
approaches to the relationship between fashion and literature. The research aims to
understand how fashion serves as a significant element in narrative construction, critically
analyzing its multiple meanings. Additionally, it seeks to examine the social impact of
fashion on women's lives through the representation of female characters in the selected texts.
The first chapter stabilishes a mapping of the relationship between fashion and literature,
focusing on cultural and time transformation through both fields. The theoretical framework
for the proposed analysis includes works by Tânia Pellegrini, Miguel Real, Karl Erik
Schøllhammer, and others in the field of literature, as well as Gilda de Mello e Souza, Gilles
Lipovetsky, and Lars Svendsen in the area of fashion studies.The second chapter analyzes the
novel "Fazes-me falta" (2003) by Portuguese author Inês Pedrosa. It explores the fashion
choices of characters across different social genres and their implications, based on Judith
Butler, Teresa de Lauretis, Mayra Cotta, Thais Farage's studies and others. The third, fourth,
and fifth chapters are dedicated to the analysis of "A gorda" (2018) by Portuguese author
Isabela Figueiredo, which examines body standards and their relationship with fashion, based
on the work of Jimenez-Jimenez, Pionório and Carina Chocano, among other references;
"Pequena coreografia do adeus" (2021), by the Brazilian writer Aline Bei, which reflects on
fashion in the search for belonging, using the studies of Diana Crane, Stuart Hall, and others;
and the short story “A vestir” (2022), by Brazilian author Eliana Alves Cruz, which serves as
a reflection on objects and memories, referencing the theoretical works of Peter Stallybrass,
Arjun Appadurai, and others. In this manner, the research aims to offer an in-depth insight
into the role of fashion in literary narratives in contemporary culture.
