MY SAMBA IS A MANIFESTO: Reading Samba School Plots as Builders of a New National Memory
Samba school; Culture; Memory; Diversity; Identity.
The project seeks to investigate the importance of samba school themes in the construction of a new collective memory in Brazil. Through the analysis of Unidos do Viradouro’s “Rosa Maria Egipcíaca” parades in the 2023 Carnival and Portela’s “Um Defeito de Cor” in the 2024 Carnival, the study seeks to understand how the parades, which address historical events, figures and narratives that are often marginalized, contribute to the valorization of the country’s ethnic and social diversity. In addition, the study examines the performative and visual strategies employed by carnival artists to communicate messages of inclusion, resistance and identity, positioning samba schools as cultural manifestations of resistance and agents of social transformation. The research highlights the role of parades in the formation of a more plural social memory, acting as a cultural and political manifesto that promotes awareness and valorization of Brazilian popular culture.
