SUMMARY:

This PhD dissertation presents a proposal for the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the ABC Learning Design (ABC-LD) didactic material for the Brazilian educational context, in order to help teachers promote greater alignment between learning objectives, teaching strategies and forms of assessment, enhancing the use of educational technologies and strengthening innovation in Brazilian teaching. ABC-LD was developed at University College London (UCL) and features a learning design model that uses storyboards to structure educational activities, promoting engagement and personalization of teaching. The main aim of this research is to propose the translation and adaptation of ABC-LD to support Brazilian teaching practices, taking into account cultural, pedagogical and regional specificities. To achieve this goal, the methodology employed follows a process of translation and transcultural adaptation (TTCA) (Beaton et al., 2000), involving four main stages: (i) translation of the original material into Portuguese by two different professional translators; (ii) review and synthesis of the translations, with terminological adjustments for greater alignment with the Brazilian educational context; (iii) control back-translation, ensuring semantic and conceptual equivalence between the versions; and (iv) validation by experts, who analyzed the pedagogical coherence and applicability of the translated material. To support the decisions in the translation and adaptation process, the theoretical framework used was based on the Theory of Constructive Alignment (Biggs; Tang, 2011) and Active Methodologies (Moran, 2015), among many other authors who complement these two central elements. With regard to the results of the research, we sought to generate an option for solving two concrete problems in the Brazilian educational context: the lack of structured teaching materials to guide Brazilian teachers in implementing active methodologies based on learning design principles and the lack of linguistic accessibility to an existing teaching material, but which cannot be used by Brazilian teachers due to the linguistic barrier of this material not yet being available in Portuguese.
