Travel Literature and Spaces of Minas Through the eyes of Cecília Meireles and Lúcia Machado de Almeida
Cecília Meireles; Lúcia Machado de Almeida; Travel; Space.
This dissertation studies the books Chronicles of a trip (1998), volume 1, Chronicles of a trip (2000), volume 3 − published posthumously −, Romanceiro da Inconfidência (1953), by Cecília Meireles, Passeio a Sabará (1952), Passeio a Diamantina (1960) and Passeio a Ouro Preto (1971), by Lúcia Machado de Almeida, as well as the letters written by Cecília and sent to Lúcia during the period from 1944 to 1963. The objective is to analyze the construction of the spatial theme of Minas Gerais − more specifically of the cities of Belo Horizonte, Diamantina, Ouro Preto and Sabará − in the travel writings of the writers, linked to the idea of travel. Contributions related to the sociocultural and historical context will be part of the research, helping to understand the emergence of modern thought about Minas. This will allow us to address the issue of national historical and artistic heritage – national memory and identity. We will also discuss the creation of SPHAN, the future IPHAN, an institute responsible for preserving national historical and artistic heritage. We intend to show how the authors’ similarities and differences are established in relation to the idea of travel.
