SUMMARY:

This research analyzes the press discourse from the late 1970s and early 1980s surrounding the murder of Ângela Diniz by her then-boyfriend, Doca Street. The analysis is grounded in the theoretical and methodological assumptions of Michel Pêcheux’s materialist Discourse Analysis (DA), as well as in the concepts developed by Brazilian DA scholars such as Eni Orlandi and Silmara Dela-Silva. In 1976, the socialite from Minas Gerais, Ângela Diniz, was murdered by her then boyfriend, businessman and playboy Raul Fernando do Amaral Street, better known as Doca Street. From that point onward, particularly in the media, a discourse emerged, blaming the victim for her own death and downplaying the perpetrator’s responsibility. This discourse was instrumental in Doca Street’s defense during his first trial in 1979, when he was sentenced to only one year and six months for the crime. The public outrage over the verdict prompted the feminist movement to rise up against gender-based violence, initiating the campaign “Quem ama não mata” (“Those who love do not kill”), and occupying discursive spaces in the media itself. Thus, this study aims to analyze how the murder of women becomes a journalistic event, using the case of Ângela Diniz as a reference. The journalistic event refers to a fact that becomes newsworthy due to its significance. This significance is assessed by journalists according to criteria established in newsroom manuals of media outlets, which define what is or is not of public interest, and what does or does not deserve media coverage (Dela-Silva, 2008). To achieve this goal, Doca Street’s first interview after the murder - published in Manchete magazine in January 1977 - as well as reports from Manchete and Veja covering his first and second trials, were selected as the foundation for the construction of the analytical corpus. Manchete was selected because it was the first media outlet to interview Doca Street, generating widespread repercussions and even influencing the discourse of the defense in the first trial. Veja was chosen due to its status as one of the highest-circulation magazines alongside Manchete during those decades. According to Kobayashi (2017), a magazine could reach a weekly circulation of up to 600,000 copies. The analyses reveal how the media played a key role in disseminating and reinforcing discourses that, to this day, naturalize, perpetuate, and promote violence against women.
