ILLITERACY AND FUNCTIONAL ILLITERACY IN THE ADULT POPULATION: a multidimensional analysis of statistical corpora and proposals for the language education of individuals entering higher education
Education. Literacy. Higher Education. Evaluation. Research.
Language teaching and learning, traditionally associated with literacy and learning grammatical rules, presents more complex demands. Thinking about language in its concrete use and in its social and historical aspects requires new theoretical frameworks. In this sense, the main objective of this work is to analyse several statistical corpora on the mastery of the vernacular language and based on these, to produce a reflection on the subject to demonstrate the importance of literacy programs in higher education. This doctoral work was developed using three main methodologies. The first is bibliographical, aiming to establish a theoretical conception of the subject studied. The second part is a documentary study, aiming to discuss statistical corpora about literacy in people who complete basic education and enter the world of work, but especially higher education. Finally, the work presents a proposal to improve the quality of Brazilian education and is therefore a work that intends to be propositional. Although they are still in their early stages, the studies undertaken allow for some preliminary considerations: the studies point to a similar context, with a small portion of the population proficient in the language, another relatively small portion of people who are completely illiterate, and a large number at intermediate levels. Therefore, most of the population is at intermediate levels of literacy, despite some disagreement among the data.
