The faces of female villainy: an analysis of characters in Brazilian telenovelas
Female Villain Characters; Brazilian Telenovelas; Narrative Theory; Gender; Intersectionality.
This project proposes a comparative analysis of female villainous characters in Brazilian telenovelas from different decades, based on two main axes: the chronological framework (1980s, 2000s, and 2010s) and the motivations behind their actions. The research is grounded in the hypothesis that female villainy is a symbolic construction that expresses and regulates social tensions related to gender, sexuality, age, and race. The characters Fernanda (Selva de Pedra, 1986), Ellen (Cobras e Lagartos, 2006), and Fanny (Verdades Secretas, 2015) will be analyzed, classified respectively according to the impulses of love, ambition, and power. The methodology is based on textual, theoretical, and discursive analysis, drawing on studies in narrative theory, gender, and intersectionality.
