Digital Metastasis: Politics and violence on optical fiber
technology, digital, philosophy, politics
This experiment proposes a cartographic navigation through the multiple digital territories—territories formed by the stratigraphic slippages among the distinct layers of the web: the deep web, the dark web, and the more visible web that operates under the glare of search engine algorithms. All these layers now occupy a field of indiscernibility, perforated by new thresholds of life’s commodification and by the unprecedented speeds that digital technology lends to the flows of capital. What we seek here is not a methodologically constrained analysis of specific aspects of contemporary digital technologies, but rather a navigation through broad currents, across the far-reaching extensions of the digital—a rubbing away of the electronic soot that settles upon the surface of the world. To that end, we will traverse diverse fronts: from technophobia to cryptocurrency scams, from Nazi pony cartoons to philosophical doctrines of robotic philanthropy, from the hypercoding of rape jokes to supremacist reinterpretations of Greco-Roman homoaffectivity. In moving through the vast modulations of the discursive territory, we aim to give density to this reading—an inquiry into the chaotic proliferation of digital media, whose deepest structuring logic remains that of capital.
