Allegories of a Deep Brazil: literary profile of the
writer Itamar Vieira Júnior
Itamar Vieira Júnior; intellectual profile; fiction; Brazilian literature
For the development of this research, I studied the fictional production of contemporary writer Itamar Vieira
Júnior up to the year 2022, with the aim of comprehending the writer's aesthetic and political project from an
interpretative analysis anchored in literary, cultural, historical, and anthropological studies. The aim is to
identify how the author explores inherent dilemmas of deep Brazil, understanding his works as strategies of an
intellectual committed to subaltern voices. To this end, certain concepts that embody the dilemmas of the
countryside such as spaces and ruralities, deterritorialization and territorialization, sub-citizenship and
subalternity, necropolitics and colonialism, legacies of slavery and religiosity are relevant to support the
discussion of the author's literary production, as well as the concepts of memory and ethnic identity which will
also be pertinent to the development of Itamar Vieira Júnior's biographical profile. The literary corpus includes
the books Dias (2012), A Oração do Carrasco (2017), Torto Arado (2018), Doramar ou a Odisséia (2021),
Geração 2010: o Sertão é o Mundo (2021), Contos de Axé: 18 histórias inspiradas nos arquétipos dos orixás
(2021), and Depois do Fim: conversas sobre literatura e antropoceno (2022). So far, as a result, the research
has shown that Itamar Vieira Júnior's fictional writing is strictly articulated with his academic career and
personal history, forming narratives that revive ancestral practices and symbolic cultural assets linked to spaces
historically occupied by black populations and traditional peoples. His literature, thus, reveals itself not only as
an aesthetic exercise, but as a space for the rewriting of collective memories and the affirmation of identities, in
which the author's individual experience finds resonance in the struggles and experiences of historically
marginalized communities.
