Materiality of the book and design innovation:
exploring the potencial of artists’ book
Italo Calvino. Materiality. Design.
This research project is based on the book If on a winter's night a traveler [Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore], by Italian author Italo Calvino, and takes a theoretical and practical approach to the materiality of the book. The aim is to investigate the materiality of the book and the Brazilian and Italian editions of the book, in order to develop an original graphic project that dialogues with its disruptive proposal and results in the production of an artist's book. The aim is to answer how the materiality of the book and the paratexts drive the reading experience in the editions analyzed and how design can reinterpret the work, enriching it and expanding the narrative possibilities. It is hoped that this research will broaden the debates on materiality and narrative and propose innovations in editorial design from an experimental perspective.
