Motivational dimension of experiences of learning and using English as a foreign language, shared on Facebook

L2 English learning experiences
L2 English use experiences
Globalization and internet popularization processes deeply affect English as a foreign language learning and use in Brazil and worldwide nowadays (KALANTZIS; COPE, 2012). Online social networking platforms, such as Facebook, for example, have become attractive environments for language research in general (SILVERMAN, 2013). This research aims to investigate the reasons why non-native speakers of English seek to learn and/or use the language in the digital age we live. This research theoretical framework comprises relevant contributions of the motivational theory in Applied Linguistics, in its socio-dynamic perspective, represented here by the works of Gardner (2010), Dörnyei (2005; 2006; 2009), Dörnyei and Ushioda (2011) and Bambirra 2009; 2016). This is an applied research, whose data collection will be carried out on a virtual page created on the social network platform Facebook for its own purposes. The instruments used for data collection are narratives of L2 English learning experiences and L2 English use, which shall be analyzed through the content analysis method. We hope that the results will be able to inform about the presence or not of global integrative motivation currently in Brazil, as researchers (RYAN, 2006; DÖRNYEI; USHIODA, 2009; 2011) attest is happening internationally, and also that they are rich and consistent enough to support a reflection on pedagogical implications for the teaching of English as a foreign language in Brazil.
