An Overview of Cartonera Publishers in Brazil
publishing field; cartonera books; cartonera publishers; independent publishers.
As the cartonera book phenomenon is recent—having started in 2003 and now spanning nearly two decades—I propose to develop an overview of cartonera publishers in Brazil from the perspective of Publishing Studies, History, and Sociology. Therefore, I will investigate what it means to "be cartonero," how the publishing processes of a cartonera publisher take place, what led to the emergence of cartoneras in Latin America and Brazil, and what the similarities and differences are among national cartoneras. To illustrate this overview, eight cartonera publishers from different regions of the country were selected: Northeast - Candeeiro Cartonera (Caruaru, Pernambuco) and Mariposa Cartonera (Recife, Pernambuco); Center-West - Curupira Cartonera (Tangará da Serra, Mato Grosso) and Maria Preta Cartonera (Ladário, Mato Grosso do Sul); Southeast - Catapoesia (Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais) and Ganesha Cartonera (Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro); and South - Magnolia Cartonera (Curitiba, Paraná) and Vento Norte Cartonero (Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul).
