SUMMARY:

Women have been present in the Brazilian literary scene since the 18th century, but due to the structural sexism existing in Brazilian society over time, female-authored writing has been ignored by critics and erased from the literary canon. Such a scenario resulted in the silencing and erasure of female writers from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. A significant example is Julinda Zenóbia Alvim (1882–1936), a journalist, prose writer, and poet, and a victim of this aforementioned process of forgetting. Just to give an idea of the memoricide the artist endured, her obituary records her main occupation as "homemaker," thereby ignoring a vast spectrum of intellectual activities, with a special inclination toward writing. Thus, the present project proposes an annotated edition of the poetry collection Saudades (1917), followed by a critical study. In this paratext, as well as in the explanatory editorial notes that will accompany the poems, we will outline an analysis of the author's aesthetic and compositional strategies, and elaborate a brief biographical profile of the writer based on data found in books, documents, magazines, and newspapers from the time she lived. The objective, therefore, is to contribute to the visibility of a writer who is extremely important to the literature of Minas Gerais, as will be seen below, but who remains underrepresented in the broader national literary memory.
